Welcome to Canberra � the Capital of the Commonwealth Federation of Australia. What a mouthful, mate. It is in Canberra that the politicians �hang-out� to spar, squabble and brutalise (verbally that is) each other to make and approve law and plans that the rest of Australia get to carry out. Well, squabbling was partially why Canberra came into existence too. When Australia the nation was formed in 1901, Sydney and Melbourne squabbled as to who was the chief city in Australia and should be the place to be the capital of Australia.
So after many a black-eye and bruised egos � the clever politicians selected a site in 1911, middle of nowhere between Sydney and Melbourne, to be created as a small city to be the capital. An international competition for the design of the new city was held. It was won by the American landscape architect Walter Burley Griffin, a pupil of Frank Lloyd Wright (the legendary American architect). Hence, if you come to Canberra expecting it to be and feel like a conventional commercial city � forget it. [see map of Canberra] It refuses to look and behave like one with its 310,000 population.
