Another must see place in Canberra is definitely the Australian War Memorial. Flanked by massive stone pylons, the dome of the War Memorial stares somberly from the lower slopes of Mount Ainslie [see panorama from Mount Ainslie] down Anzac Parade toward Capital Hill on the far shore of Lake Burley Griffin. With its great courtyard containing the Roll of Honour and the Eternal Flame, it was opened in 1941 (ironically just in time for World War 2?), and redeveloped in 1998/99. It is not just a great monument, but a world-class museum that attempts to make some sense of the senselessness of war. Beyond the carefully crafted symbolism of the exterior are extensive galleries and displays evoking the many conflicts in which Australia has been involved. [see panorama of the Hall of Valor]
