Welcome to Darwin, mate the capital of the Northern Territory! [see map of Darwin] Darwin was founded in 1869, and was named after the famous naturalist Charles Darwin. (yeah, that evolution bloke) It is a city with two histories: pre-Tracy and Post-Tracy. For your information if youre wondering Tracy is Cyclone Tracy (or the Americans may call her Hurricane Tracy). Darwin has almost disappeared from the map no less than four times. Cyclones flattened the place in 1897, 1937, and again in 1974. In between, the airplanes of the Imperial Japanese forces also did their best in World War 2 in 1942 with no less than 60 air raids. But Darwins resilience is legendary. After each disaster, the evacuated population just returned to rebuild! In 1974, Cyclone Tracy with gusts up to 280 km (175 miles) an hour destroyed nearly all the towns buildings (80%), including elegant old stilt houses. Their replacements were then conceived with cyclone-proofing in mind more than beauty! Function over form, mate. Come, lets take a whirl around Darwin city on the [virtual tour of Darwin].
