This modern complex on Fannie Bay emphasizes the unique geographical position of the territory and its capital. There is an excellent collection of Aboriginal art and artifacts, wealth of fascinating objects from neighboring Southeast Asia and Southwest Pacific, and of course the Cyclone Tracy gallery.
However, not to be ever missed is Sweetheart the monstrous saltwater crocodile which is now stuffed and harmless. Sweetheart was a terror at 5 metres (17 ft) long that once terrorized the Top End (meaning top of Australia a.k.a. Darwin) fishermen. Note that in Darwin, swimming pools and ornamental waters have to be checked before they are opened to public. Swimming or paddling in areas frequented by saltwater crocodiles can be fatal. Remember, too, that crocodiles are amphibians, and are capable of running fast too on land, mate.
