The world-famous Uluru sunset(and sunrise) is a not-to-be-missed experience. The hue and colour of Uluru changes with the setting of the sun. Uluru's colour can go from a blazing, fiery red before going towards a brownish hue as light starts to fade. Wonderful. Why does Uluru appear to change colour at sunrise and sunset ? The colour changes have more to do with the effects the earths atmosphere has on the suns rays than with the geological make-up of the rock. When the sun is low in the sky the atmosphere acts as a giant prism, splitting the suns rays into a colour spectrum. The light reaching Uluru (and also the nearby Kata Tjuta) near sunrise and sunset is mainly from the RED end of the spectrum and its reflection from the rock gives the spectacular colour. The reddish-brown colour of the rocks and surrounding sands enhance these effects. [ Please wait for Java applets and image to load. Click with left mouse button to stop motion.
