ULURU was formerly known as Ayers Rock until 1987 when ownership of it was returned to the Aboriginal people of Australia. It is the ONLY site on earth which has been given the WORLD-HERITAGE listing TWICE. One for its NATURAL significance e.g. where it is the world`s largest monolith. The other is for its living CULTURAL significance. Uluru means "meeting place", and many Aboriginal Dreaming tracks or "song lines" intersect here. The rock is sacred to the local Anangu aboriginal people. Nevertheless, in the modern world there is always a compromise.
