From the Sydney Opera House, lets dart to the other icon of Sydney the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Its within walking distance, so you wont need a transporter beam like in Star Trek. The Sydney Harbour Bridge was opened in 1932 after taking 9 years to complete during the depth of the Depression. Together with the Sydney Opera House, they complement each other to be THE icons of Sydney. Sydney would look strange without either one of them! [see panorama of Harbour Bridge and Opera House together]
OH NO! Theres a runaway overgrown Koala perched at the top of the Harbour Bridge.
The Koala is probably a runaway from the local zoo or one of the Aussie wildlife park. Dont worry as the Sydney Harbour Bridge is structurally very sound (the original designers probably designed it to withstand weight of Koalas, but at what size?). No longer the longest steel-arched bridge in the world, but old coathanger, as the Sydnesiders call it, still has the broadest deck in the world with eight traffic lanes, a double-track railway, a cycleway and a footpath. Well, you can stand underneath the bridge and just FEEL the deck traffic. The deck is 60m above sea-level and the top of the arch is 134m up. For the "more adventurous", you can take a climb over the bridge along the top of the arch and see a really spectacular view! picture, above right) Thats of course - when that darn Koala is not around. For the "more romantic", the Bridge by night is a great place to stroll past, hand-in-hand...Different horses for different courses, mate!
