Sovereign Hill, Ballarat

From Boom Towns to Ghost Towns and sometimes Cities The supply of gold to be found easily did not last very long. By the late 1850s, most of the gold that was available on the surface or by shallow diggings had been work-out. Individual miners could not afford the equipment that was needed for the excavation and maintenance of deeper mines, and the initiative passed from the self-sufficient pioneer to companies & organisation. For instance, the town of Ballarat ceased being a muddy chaos and turned itself into the most respectable of Victorian cities. Now, in Ballarat, tourists can rediscover how it was like during the gold rush days at the world famous Sovereign Hill - a re-enactment of the wild, wild 1850s.

Between 1850 1900, short bursts of gold strikes were made all over Australia, and when the gold ended poignant legacies of ghost towns were left behind. The last great rush was to the Eastern Goldfields of Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie-Boulder in 1892-3. This similarly gave a boost to the languid economy of the colony, and transformed Perth into a real city.
