Since were on the path of history, let us go pay our respects and remember the many brave Australians who gave their lives in wars overseas. The Shrine of Remembrance is modeled on the ancient Greek Parthenon, and was completed in 1934 to honour the 114,000 Victorians who served in World War 1, of whom 19,000 died. Eleven years later, at the end of World War 2, more than 250,000 Melburnians turned out here again to commemorate the ending of the second big war.
The Shrine has a central chamber with the Stone of Remembrance which is illuminated by a shaft of sunlight at 11 am every 11 November. Deep below is the crypt, displaying army regimental colours. Up high above the Shrine is a gallery that provides a spectacular panorama of Melbourne city laid out in front of it. [see panorama of the Shrine of Remembrance]
