HEY, MATE! For the last leg in the Wildlife Virtual tour, let's go to see the world famous natural Fairy Penguin Parade at Philip Island in Victoria. This is where thousands of annual visitors get to see hundreds of penguins emerging nightly from the sea and "parade" their way back to their burrows after sunset. It is also a chance for the penguins to see thousands of different tourists from all over the world each year.
Now to tell you something about Fairy Penguins. Like the big Australian emu, penguins are flightless birds i.e. they cannot fly. Fairy penguins grow to a height of 13 inches (33 cm) and live for 6 years. Penguins are excellent swimmers and spend most of their time at sea. It can dive up to a depth of 130 feet (40 m) in search of food. Their regular diet includes pilchards, anchovies, squid and krill. In turn, penguins themselves are considered prey for sharks and leopard seals.
At the end of a long hard day at sea, penguins can be found waddling up the beach to their nests. At Victorias Phillip Island penguin parade, many visitors can witness this spectacle.
