PANORAMIC VIEW - MALAY KAMPUNG MORTEN,MELAKA TOWN This panorama shot was taken at 5 pm on the 16th Oct 2000 at Kampung Morten in old Melaka Town. Kampung Morten is one of the classified national Malaysian heritage site. It preserves the surrounding and feel of a traditional "Malay kampung" (Malay village) [see related product] amidst modern development all around it, as can be seen in the panorama. It is nestled next to the Melaka River (Sungai Melaka). Traditional "kampung houses" in the Melaka architectural style can be clearly seen (those houses with the sharp angular roofs), with attractive color schemes (who says the yuppie, arty farty movement originated cool and chic?) giving them heaps of character ! For those who are wondering why Kampung Morten has such a westernised sounding name (i.e. Morten isn't particularly Malaysian sounding, ya?..), here's why. This was because the land on which the kampung was built on was donated by an Englishman named Morten during the late 19th century when Melaka was ruled by the British.
