Katherine Gorge is one of the best-known feature of the Northern Territory and really cannot contrast more starkly than with e.g. Uluru. Australia is really a land of contrasts, mate. You would have seen pictures of her massive stretch of sandstone cliffs rising to more than 100 metres (330 ft) above the serene Katherine River with tour boats cruising up and down it. 250,000 annual visitors come to enjoy the spectacular views and experience. Katherine Gorge is situated inside Nitmiluk National Park, about 29 km to the east of the town of Katherine (made famous by the novel of the Outback We of the Never Never from the saying in the area that those who live there can never never leave). Tour boats operate mostly on the lower two canyons, but the more inquisitive traveler can explore the other 11 gorges upstream by either hiring a canoe or swimming (!) before the Katherine River widens again. By the way, the small crocodiles looking on there are freshwater ones and dont attack humans. They just look unnerving thats all, mate ! Trust us.
