Well, if you have seen the Crocodile Dundee movies, you will in a way have already been to Kakadu National Park. Some 250 km east of Darwin, Australias largest national park joined Unescos World Heritage list in 1987 on account of its almost unbelievably rich and varied wildlife it sustains, plus the Aboriginal art sites it contains. In Kakadu, where the Arnhem Land Escarpment meets the coastal floodplains, scenic splendour, ancient Aboriginal culture and an incredible array of flora and fauna comes together in a brilliant coherent whole. Dig this - the park covers a huge 19,804 sq. km (7,200 sq. miles), it is home to a quarter of all Australian freshwater fish, over 1000 plant species, 300 types of birds, 75 species of reptiles etc etc. Its world-famous galleries of Aboriginal rock art particularly at Nourlangie and Ubirr Rocks give a significant insight into the dawn of man more than 20,000 years ago. Kakadu is perhaps Australias aboriginal version of the Garden of Eden.
