Aint I just a magnificent big bird, mate? . Us the Wedge-tailed Eagle are Australias largest bird of prey. We frequent both timbered countryside as well as open plains, as long as there is good food such as rabbits, young dingoes, young kangaroos and other birds. For the large Kangaroos, we wait till they have become dead carcasses, say when they freshly knocked into a moving car or truck. We are usually seen alone, or with our mate, soaring high in the sky on motionless wings, just taking in the sun. We can then suddenly break into a great burst of speed and dive towards our chosen prey for lunch. Once we were persecuted by farmers as suspected lamb killers (silence of the lambs?), but now we enjoy an Aussie perk (no, not the dole or social security) of being a protected species, like the Koalas.
