Hobart capital of Tasmania
Hobart is the capital of the state of Tasmania. It was founded in 1803 when the government in Sydney sent soldiers and convicts there to protect British sealing and whaling interests. Today, Hobart stands on the estuary of the Derwent River surrounding one of the worlds finest deep water harbours. It still has many historical reminders of the convict days, and of early sailors, sealers and whalers. Hobart today has a population of 180,000.
