The Great White Pointer Shark - Jaws
Australia has an international reputation for the variety and size of its sharks. The most feared species out of a total of 350 is the notorious Great White Pointer. Made famous by the movie Jaws and its sequel, the great white inhabits in Australian waters. Its speed during an attack can reach 22 miles per hour (35 km/h). Its characteristic razor sharp teeth can easily snap through a person�s thigh.
Female sharks lay between 2 and 100 eggs approximately 1� inches in diameter (3.5 cm). Baby sharks are not nurtured after birth and it is not uncommon to see its mother devour her offspring. Despite its notoriety, sharks are a protected species in Australia.
Perhaps the most famous Australian international sporting icon is golfer Greg Norman who has adopted the Great White Shark as his golfing nickname.
