We are also the other amazing Australian monotreme mammal, beside the Platypus, in that we reproduce by laying eggs, which hatches after 10 days of incubation in our shallow pouch (hey, you thought only Kangaroos had pouches, right?). Baby Echidna will remain in the pouch for 7-8 weeks, suckling on milk excreted from special pores. We hate it when it�s darn hot, especially as we have no sweat glands. To avoid overheating, we Echidnas spend a lot of time curled up in hollow logs, under thick bushes or buried under piles of debris. In winter, we go into �low energy power saving mode�, where we can remain totally inactive for period of 10 days or more. So you thought those Koalas can remain very still, huh, mate? Our sensitive snouts searches out food supply of ants and termite nests, our forepaw tears into the soft earth, and our long sticky tongue draws the insects into our mouths where they crushed between horny pads. Our common enemy is the Dingo. If the ground is hard, and we cannot hide, we curl up into a prickly ball. Bite into us if you like spiky thorns up your nostrils, mate.
