The bee-hive looking domes of Purnululu or Bungles Bungles Range in the East Kimberley in Western Australia is one of the most astonishing natural feature of the world. They are 350 million years old, and were revealed to the world by a TV crew as late as 1982. The Bungles cover some 640 sq. km. (247 sq. miles) of the Ord River Valley with a labyrinth of orange and black, horizontal tiger-striped, domed mountains. They are formed from very fragile silica and sandstone, and cannot be stepped and climbed on by humans without damage. The soft sandstone of the range has been eroded into strange rock formations resembling domes, turrets and beehives. Most visitors view the park by plane or helicopter; the aerial perspective reveals natures weird beauty and striking colours.
