Circular Quay is the gateway to Sydney Harbour, and is the place where the ferries, Jetcats, water taxis and tour boats of every stripe plough in and out of the docks, taking passengers up and down the grand waterway of Port Jackson. [see panorama of Circular Quay] It is also a most historical place as this was where on Sydney Cove that the First Fleet arrived from England and dropped anchor in 1788 to colonise Australia. These days, it is an epicenter of daily Sydney life, with a continuous stream of people pouring out of the railway station, taxi, buses, and the aforementioned water traffic. Trains and traffic roar by overhead, ignored by those with time enough on their hands to stop and listen to the buskers [see Aboriginal busker on Circular Quay] on the broad promenade. Over 200 years on, the pioneers who landed on Sydney Cove would have died of a heart-attack from shock if they had landed at todays Circular Quay. But they would enjoy the beer and shops.
