I am perfectly hidden behind these tree leaves. No human can see me since my beak is covered. Well us Emus have a bad reputation of being distinctly stupid, endearingly droll, insanely inquisitive while grazing and running in small flocks on the great arid outback plains.
We have forgotten how to fly that would have been real neat - gliding around like that Wedge-tailed showoff of an eagle. We stand five feet tall, weighing as much as 120 pounds. Since we cant fly, but we can still run like the Roadrunner we have been timed at speeds up to 40 miles per hour. Impressed, huh? With our broad stubby beak, we feed mainly on grass but were not too fussy and will eat almost anything including insects, roots, fruits, leaves, and sometimes old boots (hmm). We have this uncanny ability to crash through paddock fences when running at top speed, which drives the farmers really crazy. So sometimes we pay-back by being the alternative Christmas turkey. If you like egg omelettes, one of our eggs will fill the whole family.
