Batu Caves Indian Temple

PANORAMIC VIEW - UP TO THE BATU CAVES INDIAN TEMPLE This panorama shot was taken at 3 pm on the 14th Oct 2000 on the 272 steps leading up to the top of the famous Batu Caves Indian temple [see steps up Batu Caves] in Kuala Lumpur. This limestone cave houses the most sacred temple for the Thaipusam festival, the Hindu festival of panance, in the whole of Malaysia.

The Thaipusam festival is one of the most amazing sights in Malaysia, occuring in January, where as a sign of repentance, Hindu devotees often carry "kavadi" (offerings" from a simple milk jug on the head to wooded frames decorated with flowers and fruit and supported by long thin spikes pinned into the body. All this up the steep 272 steps to the temple! [see Thaipusam devotee]
