The ancient Flinders Ranges runs some 480 km from near the head of Spencer Gulf towards Lake Eyre and leads to one of Australia’s great natural curiosities, the magnificent natural "fortress" (a bit like The Alamo?) of Wilpena Pound, a 77 sq km natural amphitheatre. The “Pound” is a great oval, 20 km long and 8 km wide, protected from the outside world by sheer 1,000 metre high walls, sloping steeply to a park-like interior where the flat floor is rich in sugar gum trees, and in spring, wildflowers. Although Wilpena Pound may look like a crater, but it is the result of folding rocks, not the impact of celestial objects ! Like any great fortress, the Pound has only one way in, a narrow gorge cut by Wilpena Creek, sometimes a torrent but usually just a trickle. Any capable person should consider a trek across the Pound and up to its highest point, St Marys Peak. The reward is a stunning panorama, including the dazzling white surface of the salt-lake Lake Torrens nearby.
