Ahh…back to sea-level at Hobart’s waterfront! Hobart was founded in 1804. For many years the population comprised mostly of convicts and their overseers, though soon the harbour became a base for whalers (hmm…naughty, naughty) and sealers pursuing their prey in the Antartic and South Pacific. Hence, the true spirit of Hobart can still be sensed along the wharves and quysides of the waterfront and harbour fronting Sullivans Cove, although the whalers have long since sailed away. Fishing boats and pleasure craft tie up in the twin basins known as Victoria Dock and Constitution Dock. The name of Constitution Dock is a reminder of the great day in 1853 when the granting of a constitution marked the end of Tasmania as a penal colony for the convicts! (i.e. the convicts became free people again). It is also here that the world-famous Sydney-Hobart sailboat race ends, and then the wild celebrations begin with a festival called “A Taste of Tasmania”!
