The "Swagman" (vagabond) is Australia's complete invidualist. He is the man who turns his back on the crowded city and carries his meagre possessions along the never-ending track of the vast Australian continent. He belongs to legendary breed made famous in the song "Waltzing Matilda". The traditional swagman is becoming rare today, but these charming and gentle fellows of the road are still seen at times. This picture was taken at dusk at Bateman's Bay; kookaburra birds were laughing as the interesting and philosophical personality tramped past the spotted gums. |
